Morteza Darebhagi and George baselitz

I had started this article exactly four months ago.Started writing it with the title in place, which i usually dont do as i believe it just confines my whims. At first, I felt it as a conundrum that i am not going to resolve soon and left it all this for a while but everything changed in a week. Before going ahead ,i want you to observe the two pictures to the nitty- gritty. Now try to think “which one of is happier or sadder and why?( At least 3 reasons each)

When i had asked people around me the question in the title ,most of them never even had thought of facing it until that moment.I found it very intriguing because of a common answer from all of them not restricted to generations or attitudes:“Chill dude, dont think much”.Listening it first time, i thought that answer as reasonable. After a brief repetition of same answer, i had considered it as a invisible cloak they reside to protect themselves from reality.

Through last week speaking with my estranged love whom i longed for so long ,i realized something. It is not coincidence that the answer is repetitive and same ,it happened just because all people answered were “adults”.While speaking with each other,we two became childish . That was when i realized “the potential answer lies to the enigmatic question under discussion lies in understanding reason behind a childish scribbling we do unconsciously (when we are bored) or childishly behaving (when we are with ones we love the most).

I had gone bananas,After deducing that analogy.I had studied for a day on science behinds scribbling,Mature love and Childish love,Art therapy,Adult consciousness all by keeping my important weekend plans aside.I had found a research paper “Children’s understanding of pictures and expression of emotion in their drawings”, where writer Frau Ava Serjoue interviews children aged 6–7.She asks them first to draw something that brings them happiness and sadness. Then she asks them about the two pictures(mentioned at starting) and thier depiction of sadness /happiness in them.

How many of you saw happiness in both pictures? or Noticed colours

I dont think anyone of you saw it

but a kid saw it…..(M is the kid: Melika;speaking about the picture on right) and conversation goes as below

  1. A. So now take a look at this picture. What do you think it is about
  2. M: It is an ugly picture
  3. A: Why
  4. M: It has ugly colours, only these two colours are nice (pointing with her finger)
  5. A: So what is its story?
  6. M:…. the people in the painting are ugly and it doesn’t have nice colours, you tell me the story
  7. A: No you have to tell me
  8. M: It is about a person in whose life, every thing has been good
  9. A: Is this a happy painting or a sad painting?
  10. M: a sad painting, no a happy painting
  11. A: why?
  12. M: A sad painting
  13. A: No just tell me why you think it is happy?
  14. M: Because in her life is happiness
  15. A: How do you know this?
  16. M: Because of this happy colours are more in this picture
  17. A: So you think this is happy.
  18. A: Can you put both drawings next to each other ,So which one is more happy
  19. M: This one (Holding up the first picture)
  20. A: Why?
  21. M: Because it has more happy colours
  22. A: So look at the second painting, why do you think the artist had used these colours?
  23. M: Because he liked these colours not the other ones, and the other one also just liked these colours
  24. A: Look at the second picture, does it remind you of any thing in your life
  25. M: Yes of my parents wedding?
  26. A: Why?
  27. M: because it was happiness in it
  28. A: What made you think of your mom and dad’s wedding
  29. M: They have happiness in their lives.

Children's expression of sadness, happiness are affiliated to the personal experiences as same as the adults .They had literally drawn the happiness from nature, social, communal, self esteem same as adults.Sadness from sense of loss, threats same as grown ups.Interesting thing is “even after growing up and exposed to vagaries of the world still we draws happiness from subjective experiences subconsciously”.

To answer my question i derived a prudent definition of a Soul:“Imperishable scribbling’s of a human kept under the cloak of skin named either sins or virtues and unchanged over a life but written all over it by personal experiences/imagination” and Demands: “Choosing virtues or a sins associated with the personal experiences”.

As a metaphor, one can say “Color's are virtues or sins ,Scribbling’s are part of our soul made by our imaginations and life is a sketchbook”.

So answer is “Soul value simply depends upon its demand” until we stop using colors or having affiliation to personal experiences. “As same as some talented painter art being never sold at same price of Picasso even after recognized with more talents than Picasso by scholars matters” until he say “chill dude, dont think much”

It doesn't matter which color makes you happy. All that matter is making sure your sketchbook filled more with the colors you love and scribbling’s you yearn for life.

So next time you scribble “Acknowledge that, it represents a part of your soul” and next time you became childish “remember that,it is what you are yearning for in life”.
