I believe leadership is nothing less than magic.

I found three magic spells from three different stories for leadership in my life and I practiced them whenever I want to enchant the world around me.

One day during my sixth standard. I had finished my school and came home, had my dinner and watching a movie with my brothers. when my dad came home in the late night, we immediately stopped the TV and pretended like we are sleeping. Its routine we did as we are not allowed to watch TV in the late night. At that instance, I over heard the conversation between my father and mother. My father was briefing her about the heated conversation he had with his senior officer. He told her that he might get transferred to the new location. My mother was little vexed about it and asked my father “why he had done it”. I remember the reply from my father“When I have not done anything wrong, whatever is the situation, whomever is the opponent, wherever I am…. I don’t care”.

ABRACADABRA

That was my first magic spell moment

“As a leader you need to take a stand for what you believe in, come whatever may be the scenario”

When I was working in projects. one day we are at the verge of completing the project and commissioning a machine. If there is a delay in doing that, it has potential for greater financial loss, so everyone is working hard and focused. To understand the scenario, the terse incident goes like “We encountered a problem in the limitations of a machine and unable to commission the machine.we tried different solutions for more than two hours. That’s when our HOD walked into the control room and started listening to the solutions we tried”. After listening to us for briefly 10 minutes. He called the package engineer and told him to take permission from supplier of the machine for extending the limitation to little higher. Then we tried the same solution again and this time we had succeeded in commissioning the machine.

OPEN SESAME

that’s when I learned my second magic spell “You must use the bird eye view you have as a leader and come with an out of the box idea”

When I was started working in the procurement and contracts team. We had this meeting with the vendor regarding reconciliation of a work order for an activity. there are 6 people from the vendor side and 4 people from ours and my boss was running little bit late on that day for a half an hour. During that time, we had discussed many points but there are two points where we had conflict and no one is bothered to take it up. When my boss entered the room, the first thing he had done is taking up those two points with vendor and we wrapped up the meeting within less than twenty minutes. While leaving the room he told me, Manoj when I enter that room people feel “Arvind is here and he is going to take of every problem and I achieved that credibility over a long time”. Try to maintain the same when I am not in that room”.

MUMBO JUMBO

that’s the moment I learned third magic spell, “As a leader, you are expected to address the elephant in the room and give /strive for a solution of the impossible”

Yes there are different leadership techniques and tools to make you a good leader but remember “The magic that you create in the life of people around you is only thing that is going to make you a noteworthy leader”
